Reflections on the 2011 Season

At the Start - Ambitions for 2012 and Beyond

2012 is the most exciting year I've faced so far in my relatively short racing career. The season itself is going to be my first full world cup season so I am taking a much more professional and focused approach and setting high but reasonable goals. I've spent the winter training all the different components required to be a competitive world class downhill mountain bike racer, and I believe this will reflect in my results throughout the season.

Cross country mountain biking is my main training weapon. I believe its by far the best way to prepare for downhill racing, especially where I live. I drag myself up a steep long hill climb doing interval sprints, ride a challenging ridge, then lower the seat and rip down a long fast, technical, sometimes steep descent and then do it all again on a different hill. The bike has similar geometry to my race bike, but you can pedal it uphill and it doesn't have quite as much travel (only 7 inches) so this makes the downhill more challenging. Fantastic training.

I also have a specific training program written and coached by strength and conditioning master Nicholas Jones of DNA Sports Performance who I am associated with through Manchester University. I train my brain to race with sport psychologist Adam Wright, which I discovered last year is a massive factor in competitive sport. I also do my best to eat well and don't drink alcohol throughout the season starting from New Year's day. (That makes me sound like fun hey...)

So my goals for 2012:

1. Top 20 in the World Cup overall by the end of the 2012 season
2. Work towards achieving a top 10 result at a World Cup
3. Top 5 in the British Downhill Series overall at the end of the 2012 season
4. Podium finish at the British Championships
5. Podium finish in the Canadian Open, and win the Garbanzo Downhill at Crankworx, Whistler
6. Keep having fun whenever I ride my bike, because that's what its really about

I have stepped everything up this year now the distraction of my Optometry degree is all but gone, so I expect my results to come good and reflect this extra effort, focus and professionalism. I believe all my goals are achievable, but of course things may happen along the way due to the variability of this extreme sport which may cause them to change.
