The Big News Preseason

Back in October 2013 I signed my first professional contract with a UCI downhill trade team for the 2014 season, SC Intense. To say I was excited was an understatement! This is a dream I’ve been working towards since 2009 when I got my first UCI points and was able to start racing world cups the following year. Despite juggling a full time masters degree in Optometry from 2008 until 2012 I’ve managed to make this dream a reality. Let the hard work begin…

As soon as the contract was signed I met with my strength and conditioning coach, Nick Jones of DNA sports performance, to share the news. I’ve been working with Nick since I started Uni in 2008 and we’ve become great friends, so he was over the moon for me. We got straight to it and put together a training program designed to get me fitter than ever for the start of the 2014 season. This included the addition of motocross to the program.

I also got together with my sports psychologist, Adam Wright of Sporting Ambitions, who I’ve been working with since 2009 and told him my news. Adam’s help has been so valuable in achieving my goals and dreams over the last few years and I plan on continuing to use his guidance as I move forward. We had a good chat about how 2013 went, and how I’m feeling moving into 2014.

Half way through November I flew out to Switzerland to meet up with the SC Intense guys for the first time. The idea was a bit of a team bonding session, with the help of three days on the motocross bikes in Italy! I had a blast down there getting to know everyone. They were all really friendly and made me feel very welcome in their home. They gave me one of their 2013 team bikes to take home with me to be riding throughout the winter months to get used to, so I had a head start moving into the new season. Before I left we worked on picking out all of our kit for the coming race season which was very exciting.
Our list of sponsors includes:
Intense Bikes, Suspension Centre (SC), Fox Suspension, Formula Brakes, Alpine Stars Clothing, Bluegrass Helmets, Scott goggles and casual clothing, Schwalbe tyres, Gamut chain device, Reverse components, Sram drive train, Pacenti rims and Lindenhof Spital. I will also be using ONeal footwear.

Throughout the winter months I trained harder than ever. I was in the gym four times a week, on the MX bike two or three times a week, on the xc bike two or three times a week and I rode DH every Sunday. It was full on, but the gains were exactly what I needed. I also took three training trips to Malaga on the DH bike, one in December and two in February. Before I knew it March had arrived and it was time to head out to Portugal to meet up with the team for two UCI races with a training camp in-between. Not to mention get the new bike and all of the new gear! Let 2014 begin!
